Department: Steward Observatory (0404)Location: Main CampusPosition Summary The Steward Observatory of the University of Arizona seeks a non-continuing eligible Assistant Astronomer position to support the NIRCam team for JWST. The scientific focus will be to support the planning of guaranteed time programs with JWST and to develop data analysis tools. The candidate should have demonstrated success at planning observations as evidenced by successful proposals for telescope time and familiarity with transit data reduction. The emphasis for this position will be on characterization of exo-planets using transit observations. The position is also to help with reduction of instrument test data and to optimize analysis tools. The successful applicant with work with current NIRCam team members (see http://ircamera.as.arizona.edu/nircam/TeamList.html) in developing plans and tools. Steward is a member of the interdisciplinary Theoretical Astrophysics Program. The new University-wide Research Data Center provides access to high-end, local supercomputing resources (~275 TFLOPS) including distributed, shared-memory, and GPU architectures. Observational facilities at Steward include the 2×8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT, and the twin 6.5m Magellan telescopes. Steward is also immersed in one of the richest astronomical research environments in the world. A unique aspect of this position is that it is expected to be funded through the launch of JWST and into the first two years of operation of the telescope. Successful applicants are encouraged to stay for this entire period, subject to acceptable performance reviews. The position is at a salary from $72,000 to $75,000, depending on qualifications and experience. The positions are anticipated to start no later than September 1, 2018.
